iphone 4 camera specs

I want to discuss the iphone 4 camera specs on this page. While it is important to remember that there is much more to a camera than its number of megapixels, I am impressed by how well this camera performs. Apple has always done well in this department even before they figured out that adding a flash would be a good idea. In comparison to the 3gs, the iphone 4 specs are almost doubled in the megapixel category. Not only that but we can finally takes pictures in dimly lit areas. For those of you who just want the iphone 4 specs without my opinion here they are:
  • 5.0 megapixels
  • 29mm non-zoom lens
  • Shutter= 1/15-1/10055
  • ISO 80-1000
  • 2.8 max aperture
  • 3.5 inch LCD display viewfinder

Since I am a novice camera user I will summarize the iphone 4 camera as an easy to use point and shoot device. The pictures are impressive compared to other smart phone camera in the same category. I have used several other 3g devices which had cameras all the way up to 12 megapixels. While their numbers might score higher than the iphone 4 camera specs, either I wasn’t operating them properly or they just weren’t all that much better. Sure more megapixels might mean bigger pictures but I only need for them to be as big as my monitor. I’m not printing up life size photos from my cell phone so all of that space just seems wasted if you ask me.
It is also noteworthy to mention the iphone 4 video recording. While a lot of camera work well with still photos or videos, the iphone 4 camera performed well in both categories. The auto focus mechanism makes it easy to record even at close range. I had a fixed location about 18 inches away from the phone while I recorded video under fluorescent lighting and it turned out looking very nice. I know of at least one movie that was shot entirely on an iphone 4. Check out the Avengers preview below. Parts of this were filmed using an iphone 4 camera!

While one might think that a serious camera enthusiast wouldn’t dream of using a cell phone camera to produce professional images well, maybe they would after all. It’s hard to find fault with something that is so easy to use yet produces a high quality product. The only thing that I’m not super excited about is the front facing camera. While this isn’t the primary camera would it have really been so hard to use something decent? A .3 megapixel 640x480 VGA resolution toy is a bit disappointing to find in any Apple product. That makes facetime look worse than most webcams. I don’t expect a lot but .3 MP? Other than that it really is decent overall.

Another thing that is nice to know is that you can replace your lens cover easily if it becomes scratched. It is actually built into the rear panel of the phone. You can easily replace it yourself using just a screwdriver or pentalobe driver depending on how old your iphone 4 is.

Just remove the two screws at the bottom and slide the back panel upwards. Then install your new replacement back and you have a brand new camera lens. Remember that this does technically void your warranty if Apple finds out. If you strip the screws at the bottom or replace the back with a different color you can kiss your warranty goodbye. Then again if the back is all scratched up or broken then it is probably too late anyways.
